Parenthood and Pinterest

I love pinterest as much as the next home decorator, DIY'er, wedding planner and expectant parent out there but I have to admit sometimes it makes me laugh. You can pretty much tell what life stage everyone is in by what they pin. Are they planning their upcoming wedding (or just doing a little pre-engagement ring shopping for their girlfriends to "accidentally" drop hints for the fiance to be). Are they buying a home and pinning up a storm of home renovations. Or are they planning for a little one to join the world by putting together the perfect nursery board to inspire their little one's first ever bedroom.

Whatever it is, I've pretty much hit all those stages and I definitely wish Pinterest was around when I was getting married - some really great ideas on there!  But now that I have graduated I still love the site but find that my new parent brain views things differently. Maybe I am the only one but I can't seem to view a perfectly designed living room without zeroing in on the coffee table with glass top and think, "hmm no go - Brady will just knock that over on top of himself!" Or view beautiful front porches and wonder, "looks great, but where the railing," and so on?

This afternoon I caught myself in one of my classic new parent spirals of over analysis and I had to laugh.  I was so humored by it I thought it would be worth documenting what goes through a new parent mind when they see things...

The unsuspecting image was this adorably styled night stand that masters the balance of eclectic sophistication...
And this is how this perfectly styled night stand appears to a new parent (or at least my) brain...
Maybe it's because it's my first time around but I just can't seem to shut my head off with these nagging thoughts. As a result our living room is still without a new coffee table, just a lonely space awaiting the perfect piece that fits my need for industrial chic with a mixture of wood and metal with soft corners and lines so as not to draw blood when my adorable son inevitably nose dives into it.
